Wearing The Right Post Operative Garments

By Alison Wilcox

A person who is in the hospital has assigned things to wear. This goes for patients as well as medical staff. If a person is having surgery, they will need the right post operative garments.

It is commonly known that patients wear hospital gowns. They will wear one into surgery, and they will wear it coming out afterwards. These gowns are one piece of cloth which normally ties on the back. A patient can wear another on top with the ties in front for more privacy. These are great for medical staff because doctors and nurses can easily access areas like a surgical wound on the abdomen.

Especially after surgery, this is important because a patient will have some sort of surgical wound. This will need to be looked at frequently to make sure that there is no extra bleeding or infection arising. Also, after surgery, patient many times have tubes and other things sticking out of them at various places. It makes it much easier to check them with the gowns that are made available now.

Keeping a patient clean is also very important. These gowns make it much easier to access a patient to clean them up during their stay. Putting pajamas right after a surgery may be too much of a hassle, so these gowns work much better.

Doctors and nurses have their own set of wear that they need to put on while at work. A majority of people wear something called scrubs. These are also worn post-operatively.

These things are great for doctors and nurses because they are comfortable to wear. However, they also provide protection when it comes to handling patients. They can easily be changed if something spills on them. It also helps to keep from spreading germs when heading home after work. These are worn by everyone during a surgical procedure.

There is good news for patients. They are finally going to have an upgrade to the hospital gowns that are currently out there. These new gowns will be a little bigger or longer in length. They will open only on the front, and they will fasten closed. This gives patients much more privacy than they offer today.

It is necessary for everyone involved in post-operative care to wear the right thing. This includes both the surgical team and the patient. There are important reasons for that including better access to things like surgical wounds which need constant monitoring while the patient is in the hospital. It helps to keep a patient cleaner than if a patient were wearing a pajama set which makes it cumbersome to remove and place back onto the patient. Doctors and nurses also have to examine things like tubes and other devices placed at the surgery. Emptying canisters and bulbs filled with fluid are necessary which can spill or splash. These post operative garments make it easy to change and clean up quickly for everyone. They both have their advantages.
